This little chap I recently found in the Christmas tree mulch, by our old shed. It seems to be a caterpillar of the knot grass moth. It feeds on docks (among other things), and we've got an abundance of those growing around. It's one of those species at threat because of habitat loss (farmers ripping out hedgerows). They love hedgerows. I've got lots of hedgerows.

One of beautiful Norway Spruce Christmas trees, ready for order now, but because they have a habit of dropping their needles if cut too early, we only cut them to order, and preferably not before 5th December.

This little bug landed on my glasses lens today an

This little bug landed on my glasses lens today and refused to budge, so I thought she might like to be added to my growing Christmas Tree menagerie. I'm not exactly sure what kind of bug she is, but I do know she's a type of parasitic fly. Her long 'tail' is called an ovipositor, in that it's function is to pierce the skin of her host and deposit her eggs there. The host is usually the baby grub of a bee, beetle, cockroach, sawfly, sometimes a spider. This one, with it's very long ovipositor, can reach hosts tunnelling deep into plants ... and these parasites must have amazing powers of detection to be able to do that based on scent and vibration. While it's pretty gross what they do (the eggs hatch and consume their hosts from within, like something out of a horror film), their presence is a good indicator that the ecosystem on the farm is not only alive and well, but also healthy in it's complexity. 🐛🐛🐛🦟🦟🦟

Father Christmas stopped by today on his summer holiday.... hoping to go abroad but he can't figure out the paperwork and red tape.

Jolly start to the day with some random common toadflax (Linaria vulgaris) that has appeared between the Christmas trees. It is a good food plant for many different insects, but can only be pollinated by strong flying insects like bees and bumblebees.

This I am really proud about!!! I stumbled upon this little beauty - a common spotted orchid (Dactylorhiza fuchsii) - whilst pruning the Christmas trees. While it's not the rarest of orchids in the UK, I almost dropped my shears in disbelief that it had chosen my farm as suitable place to live. For years I've been carefully managing my site to promote wildlife, and this is clearly a sign that things are moving in the right direction. So a little jewel hidden among the trees... let's hope it sets seed and proliferates!

A couple of butterflies spotted today in the long grass on our farm: what I think is a meadow brown (the one with the spot), and the black and white one a grizzled skipper. Correct me if I'm wrong. It was a challenge enough to photograph them before they flew away.

What I assume to be a male deer skull... the latest find on the Christmas tree farm... evidence (not that we need it) of deer, although sightings have been down since 2019 for some reason.

Giant aphids and busy bees 🐝. These giant aphids often make an appearance on my Christmas trees at this time of year. They do little damage, and mostly end up as bird food, disappearing by the end of June. They attract hoards of ladybirds, which feed off the sticky honeydew that the aphids produce from the tree sap that they feed on. This year, though, is the first time I've ever seen bees also feeding off the honeydew. Some of them are honeybees, so if someone has a hive nearby, then it's possible they're making Christmas Tree Honey!

Foxtail grass (Alopecurus) coming into flower; it must almost be time to mow between the Christmas trees! We limit our use of weedkillers as much as possible, which has many ecological benefits as it allows native plants to flourish and provide habitats, as well as locking nutrients in the soil and preventing soil erosion.

Been trying to get a photo of one of these things for quite some time now. There must be hundreds of them in my perimeter hedge, making such a racket, flirting about in flocks whenever someone gets near. But getting a photo of one... is a challenge! What is it? A lovely sparrow!!!
